You're absolutely right, I should have phrased it differently. It would be better to say that evolution is the only thing which explains the fossil record. As regards Darwin and the fossil record, we know quite a bit more palaeo now of course, and the new stuff - e.g. the Ediacara biota which I work on, or the Precambrian record of prokaryotes and eukaryotes, shows he was wrong, in my opinion.
