paleonet Re: persistent hate e-mails

Dear Dr Donaho,

In your postscript, you state that you do not take responsibility for your brother fundamentalists who seem to want to return the United States to a half-baked theocracy, where the teaching of science is constrained by a narrow quasi-literalist interpretation of certain parts of a single religious text adopted by one of the world’s multifarious religions. It is perhaps heartening to see that you also realise there is a problem with these rather peculiar people, to the extent that you wish to distance yourself from their activities. Shouldn’t you, like most of us, attempt to do something about them, other than just avoiding the issue? Or do you, while not accepting responsibility for their actions, quietly acquiesce to their aims?

In one of the previous postings, to which you presumably refer as ‘hate-e-mail’, I remember one correspondent asking at a ‘christian’ bookshop if they had anything about evolution. The response from the staff-member they asked was along the lines of ‘you can’t be a Christian and believe in evolution’. Funny, but this doesn’t seem to bother the Pope. Do you believe that evolution provides the best explanation for the current diversity we see around us?
