May an amateur comment? A Usenet newsgroup may optionally be moderated to reduce the amount of clutter or noise. The cost is that this requires a possibly considerable investment of time by a competent and un-biased moderator. An un-moderated newsgroup will quite likely get a large fraction of posts from amateurs. Most of these will be well-intentioned, but many of them will be quite naive, and some number of them will be pure crankism. (See for example sci.astro.) I had assumed that PALEONET was deliberately a mailing list precisely to avoid the noise inherent in a Usenet/Internet newsgroup. Regards, Richard Schumacher
