Recovery is more interesting than extinction, but not as exciting or Timely. I disagree that understanding the recovery from extinction is less exciting or timely than understanding extinction dynamics. In the case of the F/F event, echinoderms were devastated along with many other groups. Regardless whether the extinction event was sudden, prolonged, stepped or pulsed, stemmed echinoderms again flourished in the Carboniferous. In this case and many others, understanding the dynamics of rebound and rediversification is both timely and exciting. The recent IGCP 335 meeting (Biotic Recovery from Mass Extinction Events" in Plymouth provided plenty of examples within thid context.
