You misunderstood my point, Norm.  What I said was that the nature of the
extinction (duration, rate, selective patterns, etc.) may, indeed almost
certainly will, control the nature of the subsequent recovery events.  I
didn't claim the reverse.  Your comment is contradictory however, since your
next statement acknowledges that survivors (which are a part of the
recovery) do provide information about the extinction.
  You guys go ahead and have all the fun you want with the K/T - just
keep the iridium and the physicists away from the P/Tr!
