paleonet Workshop on Permo-Carboniferous Ichnology

Dear Paleonetters,

You've read about the extraordinary Union Chapel track site before as an
example of cooperation between amateur and professional paleontologists. Now
see the finds for yourself! All ichnologists are invited to attend the
workshop. Permo-Carboniferous ichnologists (vertebrate and invertebrate) are
particularly invited to send proposed talk titles by December 10.

Cheers,
Andrew

WORKSHOP ON PERMO-CARBONIFEROUS ICHNOLOGY
First Circular

Sponsored by the Alabama Museum of Natural History, Geological Survey of
Alabama,
and Alabama Paleontological Society
University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Alabama (USA)
May 2 to 4, 2003

The Workshop will focus on a recent find of more than 1000 amphibian
trackways and trails from the coal-bearing Pennsylvanian (Langsettian)
Pottsville Formation of Alabama. Ample material of Cincosaurus and Undichna
will be available for study by the participants. Also available is a diverse
suite of marine to freshwater invertebrate trace fossils from the same
formation, including traces made by insects and xiphosurans. Please see
http://bama.ua.edu/~rbuta/monograph/ to preview the trace fossils. You may
ask to see particular specimens if we receive the request by April 1.

Talks: Participants (limited to 15) are invited to give one oral
presentation on Permian or Carboniferous ichnology. The auditorium has
facilities for slides, overhead projectors, and Powerpoint presentations.
Please send a proposed title by December 10, 2002, and an abstract of up to
two pages (plus up to four pages of illustrations) by April 1, 2003.
Ichnologists of other specializations are encouraged to attend but talks
must be appropriate to the workshop.

Field trip: The Workshop will include an optional one-day field trip to the
Union Chapel Mine if weather and reclamation allow. The site has already
been partly reclaimed; participants who prefer to remain in Tuscaloosa to
study the specimens will be accommodated.

Date: May 2 to 4, 2003 (Friday to Sunday).

Organizers: Anthony J. Martin (Emory University), Andrew K. Rindsberg
(Geological Survey of Alabama), Ed Hooks (Alabama Museum of Natural
History), Ronald J. Buta (University of Alabama), David C. Kopaska-Merkel
(Geological Survey of Alabama).

Venue: Alabama Museum of Natural History & Geological Survey of Alabama,
University of Alabama campus, Tuscaloosa, AL. Tuscaloosa is on Interstate
Highway 20/59 in west-central Alabama. The nearest large airport is at
Birmingham, about one hour’s drive to the northeast. Atlanta is 200 miles
(~300 km) away, about a 3-hour drive.

Cost: The registration fee is estimated at USD 50 but may go up or down
slightly before the meeting. This includes the abstract booklet, field trip
and guidebook, Aldrich’s 1930 publication on amphibian trackways, "Lost
Worlds in Alabama Rocks" by Jim Lacefield (2000), and Saturday dinner.
Lodging and other meals are up to each individual; information will be
distributed.
