Palaeontology, Naturalis
The National Museum of Natural History Naturalis (Leiden, The
Netherlands) gathers and disseminates knowledge about our planet as a
natural system and the position of Man in that system. The Museum
moved to completely new premises in 1997. The total number of
employees at the moment is 140 ftu with another 100 project workers,
students, volunteers, and guest researchers. The exhibitions are
visited by 250 000 persons per year.
The Department of Palaeontology is part of the Sector Collections and
Research and has working units on Micropalaeontology, Palaeozoic,
Mesozoic and Cainozoic Macro-invertebrates, Microvertebrates,
Macrovertebrates, and Palaeobotany. In the department there is a
vacancy for a
Curator of Fossil Microvertebrates (female/male)
(32 hours per week)
Because the present Curator of this unit retires on September 1, 2002,
the position will become vacant.
The initial appointment will be for one year, with the prospect of a
permanent appointment. The Curator is responsible for the
Microvertebrate Unit of the Department of Palaeontology.
As such he is supposed to:
- be actively engaged in expanding the existing collections, their
conservation and management, with an emphasis on microvertebrate
fossils;
- conduct independent research, both on collections and
problem-oriented, in the field of Cainozoic microvertebrate
palaeontology and stratigraphy, resulting in research reports and
publications, in particular concerning the interaction between faunas
and land distribution (as part of the research programme
Dynamics of land-water distribution as a motor of evolution);
- editing of scientific publications in the field of vertebrate
palaeontology;
- provide scientific services to the public facilities of the
museum;
- provide information, both orally and in writing, to the general
public;
- direct the work of a collection technician;
- participate in meetings of the scientific staff of the Museum.
We expect the successful candidate:
- to be able to work independently;
- to have a completed university degree, specialised in palaeontology
and stratigraphy;
- a PhD title is a standard requirement;
- research experience in the field of Microvertebrate palaeontology,
preferably on rodents;
- good knowledge of English (orally and in writing);
- if Dutch is not the mother tongue, willingness to learn Dutch;
- good social skills;
- experience in project management is an advantage.

- a salary of ¤ 46.578,- per year, including vacation allowance and
incorporation into the pensionfund.
