I'd like to thank Bill Riedel for his detailed and very useful comments on expert systems as they relate to the Paleo21 Quantification, Computers & Databases topic. We'll certainly be devoting a section of our final to expert systems, as Bill has suggested. I'd also like to encourage all paleontologists interested in the Paleo21 initiative to follow Bill's lead and provide the topic groups with detailed arguments for including additional subtopics, alternative points of view, etc. in the various Paleo21 reports. It's one thing to say "they (= the topic group) ought to provide some discussion of or recommendations for x in their report." But it's quite another to take the time to put together a well-reasoned memo that gives full expression to your concern and the reasons for it. Both are useful, but the latter makes it much more likely that the concern will be addressed in a mutually satisfactory manner in the final report. Just in case you missed one of the previous announcements, all Paleo21 topic reports can be accessed from the Paleo21 web page: http://www.nhm.ac.uk/paleonet/paleo21/ There are 25 preliminary topic reports and all of them can be printed or written to a text file from your web browser. Please take the time to read these reports and please send your comments to Paleonet or to the topic coordinators/delegates, all of whose e-mail addresses, surface mail addresses and/or phone/fax numbers are listed on the web site. Thanks again Bill.
