Lower Devonian Rhynie Cherts and hot springs...

RHYNIE CHERT..........UPDATE...

Summer '97 sees the latest phase of drilling exploration
at the Lower Devonian epithermal hot springs at Rhynie,
Scotland by the Dept. of Geology, University of Aberdeen.
These sinter deposits host the world famous
Rhynie Cherts with their unique silicified early land
plants and arthropods.

To date, eight holes have been located in and around the
Rhynie area, two of which are sited within the bounds of
the SSSI (Site of Scientific Interest) reserve. One of
these drilled to 50m pin-pointed the top of the cherts
and overlying sediments. The other, to a depth of 230m
intercepted basement and yielded important new
information on the sediments underlying the cherts.

If you would like to be kept up to date on the drilling
progress, please contact me off list. I hope to have a
web page on this project up and running soon.

Cheers,

Lyall
