Paleontology eliminated as a requirement - posted for dlh

Folks,
I offered to post this message for David Harmon, who is not on the
list, so you might cc or respond to him at (DLHARM1@ukcc.uky.edu). It
is not quite as bad as this sounds since they still offer an
invertebrate paleo course, but that is not required of the geology major
and won't be offered without enough enrollment.
I still find it crazy that geology could be offered without a
course in fossil organisms, but maybe it is my biological prejudice that
thinks that wants to think of the paleocommunity when I think of
fossils.
And if they don't take the invertebrate course, how can they do
basic biostratigraphy?

The Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Kentucky is
in the process of creating new guidelines for granting degrees in geology.
It is my understanding that when the new requirements pass, a student could
get a degree in geology without ever taking a class in paleontology.
Paleontology will still be offered, but not as a requirement. Any comments
from readers of sci.bio.paleontology?
IMHO this is an outrageous dumbing down of the curriculum. Any advice
on how a recent alumni can fight such stupidity on the part of certain
people?I fear that the faculty has already decided.
