Dear Paleonetters The Palaeontological Museum, University of Oslo, has now published a catalogue of the trilobites specimens described and figured by Friedrich Schmidt in his voluminous monograph "Revision der ostbaltischen silurishen Trilobiten" (7 volumes from 1881 to 1907). This work is a standard reference for all trilobite workers and stratigraphers concerned with the Ordovician of Baltoscandia. A problem with the monograph has been that the specimens are not identified in the figures. It was feared that during the upheavals in Russia since the publication of the last volume (1907), the collection was destroyed. This has, fortunately, proved not to be the case. During a stay in Moscow in April-96 and in St Petersburg in May-96, David Bruton, Lessanu T. Beyene and myself were able to trace and identify about 70% of the original 1408 specimens. That so many specimens has survived is a tribute to the good work done under difficult circumstances by the Russian reseachers and staff at the Museums. The catalogue is divided into four parts: The introduction has a small biography of F. Schmidt, a history of the collection and a report on its present status and that of its repositories in Russia and correlation charts for the Ordovician and Silurian of the east Baltic, tying Schmidt's units into a modern framework. Part 1 is an alphabetical list of taxa with reference to volume (part), plate and figure or text-figure with page reference, Museum catalogue number ( or listed as "missing"), Stratigraphical occurrence and locality data. Part 2 is a list of taxa in the order they are figured according to volume (part), plate and figure reference. The present corresponding museum catalogue number is given for reference. The full information on the specimen is found in Part 1 Part 3 is a taxonomic revision of almost all the species described by Schmidt, based mostly on the available litterature. Revised binomen, with reference to the revisor(s) is given. Where no reference is given, the revision is that of the present authors. The catalogue's full title is: -David L. Bruton, Ole A. Hoel, Lessanu T. Beyene & Andrei Yu. Ivantsov (1997): -Catalogue of the trilobites figured in Friedrich Schmidt's "Revision der ostbaltischen silurischen Trilobiten" (1881-1907).
