The American Museum of Natural History in New York City (and all other city-financed museums, I believe) have what seems to me a very fair admissions policy. There is a suggested admission (currently $8.00 for adults) but any amount is accepted - you can pay whatever you can afford. I have no idea how that works out for the museum, but it seems to me to be an elegant solution to the quandry of charging admission to public museums.
