More Electronic Journal Stuff

Norm raised a very important point in his "What if we began an EPJ and
nobody came?" posting and cited the difficulty that he has had getting
editorial imput for the paleo forum editorials. I do not think that will be
a problem in an electronic paleo journal when researchers realize just how
quickly their work can be published (which is more our bread and butter
than editorials). As Norm also points out the ability to push the
traditional publishing envelope with full color figures and plates, videos,
etc. should attract quite a good clientele.

A discussion thread that has emerged in the last 24 hours has informed us
that there are already several electronic earth sciences journals and more
are on the way. Thus do we need an Electronic Paleontological Journal?

e.g. Una Smith wrote:
"At biology conferences in the US over the past year, every major
commercial publisher seems to be showing off electronic versions of their
journals.
Many professional societies are moving in this direction also."

In addition, Jere Lipps informed us that Marine Micropaleontology is about
to go on line as well. As a micropaleontologist with a vested interest in
such things would Jere tell us more about what the online Marine
Micropaleontology will be like? Will it be exactly the same as the printed
version, a companion publication, contain appendices that would not fit in
the regular journal?

Do any other existing paleontological societies or other publishers have
plans to go on line with a paleo-type journal? Comments from officers of
these societies or publishers would be welcome.

Inquiring minds would like to know.
