Norm,
When I was Program Director for Geology and Paleontology at NSF, I
noticed a (probably unfortunate) tendency for grant proposals to follow,
with a lag time, the interests of the current program director.  My first
couple of rounds, I received an awful lot of taphonomy proposals, until
people realized Karl Flessa was no longer in office and that my research
interests were in evolution and paleoecology.  Since Chris Maples is the
new program director, we might expect to see some extra research
efforts in his areas of interest in the near future!--Tricia Kelley
