Dear Colleagues: I understand that the micropaleontology program in the Institute for Earth Studies at University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, is in trouble. I am writing to ask that interested persons write in support of the program, which has a very long tradition and has been quite productive of research and educated young professional micropaleontologists. Apparently some people in positions of responsibility at Aberystwyth do not realize what a strong program in micropaleontology they have; and, furthermore, they do not realize how relatively easy it is to maintain a reputable paleontology program and how difficult it is to rebuild a program anew. Professor J. R. Haynes has retired and was not replaced leaving foraminifera uncovered. Now Professor R. C. Whatley is under some pressure to take early retirement. Part of the trouble stems from the difficult job market, but as we all know the job situation in micropaleontology, while poor, is no worse than most other areas of geology. Only environmental geology, hydrogeology, and geophysics seem to be mor salable at present. Letters in support of the program should be addressed to: Professsor D. Ll. Morgan, Principal University College of Wales Aberystwyth, Dyfed 2SY 23DB Wales United Kingdom Thanks for your help. Best wishes, Roger L. Kaesler -- Roger L.
