Palaeontologists interested in all matters relating to ontogeny and phylogeny will be intrigued by the publication of the 1994 Supplement to the journal *Development*, entitled 'The Evolution of Developmental Mechanisms' or words to that effect, which just landed on my desk. Our molecular colleagues are at last sitting up and taking notice of the enriching contributions of palaeontology and comparative anatomy. Conversely, molecular biologists are now making real contributions to the solutions to hoary old chestnuts such as the origins of the vertebrate head, ditto the tetrapod limb, the 'Cambrian Explosion' and other good things. The usual stars (notably Peter Holland) are joined by palaeontologists such as Simon Conway Morris and Mike Coates, hardly regular contributors to *Development*. It looks like a veritable feast, and well worth a trip to the library. Read it and surprise your molecular colleagues with your knowledge of such arcana as Hox genes, genetic duplications, Spemann's Organiser, etc. -- Henry Gee ------------------------------------------------------------ Nature, henry@chiswick.demon.co.uk 4 Little Essex Street, naturelondon@mcimail.com London WC2R 3LF nature@naturedc.com tel +44 171 836 6633 x 2473 fax +44 171 836 9934 ------------------------------------------------------------
