Dear Ken,
I read about those comments from the deputy minister yesterday on the BBC.
It is definitely disturbing, but not very surprising. From our recent
experiences here in the U.S., I would suggest that the most important things
to do are to organize scientists and educators, and to engage the (voting)
public in the debate. At least here in the U.S. I think that the public is
actually more willing to listen to our arguments than they are generally
given credit for. But organized responses are vital. If there are national or
regional scientific academies and societies that are able to make statements
regarding the validity of evolutionary theory, and the non-scientific nature
of the other nonsense, then they should be encouraged to do so.
