Re: paleonet Fabrication of some nannoplankton papers

Dear all

I have briefly looked into these allegations. The paper referred to here is
El-Dawoody A.S. (1998) On the biostratigraphic significance of nannofossils
in the Paleogene of Egypt. Egyptian J. Geol., 42/2 365-392.

This paper is a summary of application of the Martini (1971) nannofossil
zonation to the Palaeogene of Egypt. It is not especially original or
concise but seems inoffensive. Some phrases and even sentences from Martini
(1971) do appear in the notes on individual zones but this does not occur to
an excessive extent, and I did not detect any entire paragraphs being
copied. Most of the text is written in idiosyncratic english which certainly
was not plagiarised from any international journal
The article is illustrated by two plates of light micrographs, the plates
are very badly reproduced, but the identifications are fine. I cannot see
any images which come from Martini (1971) or Perch-Nielsen (1985) and the
only Martini (1986) paper I know of is illustrated with SEMs.

So I do not see any evidence for serous ethical misconduct by El-Dawoody in
this paper as alleged in M. Jordon's email.
