Re: paleonet Re: Josh Smith forced resignation from Washington University

I wasn't going to respond. I don't know this man. But it is
definitely not about just this man. At least he didn't get away with
it. Most do. I decided to say something because saying it is
inappropriate for this list is equivalent to saying that it is a
matter only for the authorities. It is not. It is an environment of
tolerance for rape and sexual harassment of all kinds. And it should
be talked about. On this list.

This problem is rife everywhere, but especially in academia, and
especially in field sciences, and especially in vertebrate paleontology.

As a woman who has been a v.p. for many years, I have been horrified
by all of this. At C.U. it has only been the Instructors that get
reprimanded. The professors don't get into trouble over sexual
harassment--or worse. They have too much status and clout. A lot of
it, but not all, is because of field seasons and the heavy drinking
that goes on there.

I actually had a friend, who was a student at the time, that was
raped in the field. By a paleobotany student at one of the eastern
schools. She wouldn't let me go after him. She was too afraid and
embarrassed. I would imagine that every woman knows these stories--
and many men too. She quit paleontology.

Then there were the bad old days, when I was a student, when they
wouldn't allow women to do summer field because of the sexual issues.
Women students had to do their summer field BY Themselves.

Rape, and its tamer counterpart sexual harassment, is NOT OK! And it
has been a serious problem in vertebrate paleontology. Get real boys
and girls.
