A kind Spanish-speaking correspondent has politely pointed out that some readers may have gotten "weird feelings" with my recent posting from my generic mailbox, "joda_paleontology@nps.gov". I gather that the word "joda" means something quite, ah, impolite ... ! That's the first I've ever heard that, and I'm sorry if it was perceived that way - although it sounds like she got a laugh out of it. We don't really have any choice in these abbreviations. All National Park Service units have an acronym (governments love these things) made up of the first 2 letters of the first two words in the park's name; thus, John Day Fossil Beds is JODA, Grand Canyon is GRCA, Yellowstone is simply YELL, and so forth. Spanish-speaking folk always enjoy seeing the acronym on workers' hardhats at Carlsbad Caverns... Also, I'm delighted at the number of people interested in attending; could folk please include their letter-mailing address in their off-list replies so we can send the invitations & reply forms out? Thanks and we look forward to having you join our August gathering. cheers! ted __________________________________________ Theodore Fremd Paleontologist, John Day Fossil Beds Science Advisor, Pacific West Region U.S. National Park Service Ted_Fremd@nps.gov TFremd@darkwing.uoregon.edu 541-987-2333 x 19 32651 Highway 19, Kimberly, OR 97848 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ "I wish that every student of life sciences could spend a summer in the John Day Basin and see the silent drama of organic evolution there enacted - for paleontology is a most dramatic science: creatures come on the stage, enact each his part, and pass off, to be followed by others..."
