-----Original Message----- From: owner-molluscalist@uclink4.berkeley.edu [mailto:owner-molluscalist@uclink4.berkeley.edu] On Behalf Of Rudiger Bieler Sent: Tuesday, April 09, 2002 3:36 PM To: molluscalist@uclink4.berkeley.edu Subject: Malacological Serials Database on-line Malacological Serials Database on-line A database of all known molluscan journals and newsletters (1773-2002) has been posted at http://fm1.fieldmuseum.org/collections/search.cgi?dest=mjl The field of molluscan literature is blessed with (and at times haunted by) an amazing diversity of serials. These range from major journals of high international standing to obscure technical series and local shell club newsletters. Few are covered by abstracting services, and many have been missed by subsequent workers (and the Zoological Record). Building upon an earlier paper by the same compilers (Bieler, R. & A. R. Kabat, The Nautilus, 105[2]: 39-61, 1991), this computer-searchable database provides a considerably expanded compilation of nearly 500 titles of the printed malacological serials. We included basic bibliographic information (such as full title, place, and duration of publication) as well as cross-references to the frequent name changes, special issues, and supplement volumes. This is an ongoing project and we plan to provide updates as we obtain new data. No library in the world has a complete set of the serials, and not all the serials listed are present in our own institutions' holdings. We have been (and will remain) dependent on input from colleagues from around the world. Additions and corrections are most welcome and ideally include supporting materials (such as originals or copies of serial issues that we might have missed). Our home institutions are maintaining extensive collections of malacological journals and newsletters for public use -- all contributions (even of single issues) are greatly appreciated and will be used to improve, and hopefully complete, our serial runs.
