Hi Niko I've just had a virus attack on my computer (a month ago), and realized afterwards that the virus did contain the neccessary code to prepare and send mail without the use of the standard mail program (i.e. Outlook). The virus just used the addess list in Outlook to get a set of addresses to abuse. Thus, an invalid mail address may not stop an intelligent virus, simply because there is no code to stop it. However, placing your own legal address to some alternative mail adresses (like hotmail.com, or your E-mail address at work) in your address list, very soon gives you a hint that something is wrong. A good source for virus information at Symantec: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/vinfodb.html Obviously, but underestimated, regular use of a virus scanner will probably limit the damage time and extent. best luck, Bjørn Funke Hønskogen 22 1384 ASKER, Norway priv.: bjorn.funke@connect.no ----- Original Message ----- From: "nikolaus malchus" <nikolaus.malchus@uab.es> To: <paleonet@nhm.ac.uk> Sent: 27. november 2001 14:23 Subject: Re: paleonet WARNING final comments > Hi paleonetters, > > Although the following may not apply in the present case, here is some > prevention in case a virus is sending itself stealthily using your e-mail > list: > Create an e-mail entry and type as name just some zeros (0000).
