paleonet WARNING final comments

I really hate dealing with this subject on Paleo lists.  However, as a final 
wrap
of the virus attacks today ....

I am passing on the following information to the lists for those who are 
interested.

1)  It was obvious that certain people were the target to plant the
BadTrans.B virus on our computers.  Most know that I am involved with the
Pennsylvanian project in St. Louis.  The virus attack was sent to me using
the Subj:  RE: paleonet Pennsylvanian (geological) Link

Roger Pabian was the target by using the following
Subj:  RE:  Request for a crinoid identification

Both indicate a Reply to what we are involved in.  Pennsylvanian and
Crinoids.  These were NOT replies to our previous emails.  The Subj. lines
was used to appear that these were replies.

The emails had the following in the "From:" section of the emails
_trooper@midmaine.com (Janice, Petra, Mac)
Note:  the email starts with an underscore.  This obviously is not a real 
email.

In these cases the body of the emails were blank.
In these cases there was a download attached to the emails.

There were others that were the target using such tactics.

2)  With in a few minutes of me sending the WARNING email to the lists,
I received another email.  This time the Subj. line read as follows

Subj:    Re: WARNING ---
Date:   11/26/2001 9:29:57 AM Central Standard Time
From:   _fossils@online.ru (Arkadiy)
To: Lakeneosho@aol.com
File:  CARD.DOC.pif (29020 bytes)
DL Time (40000 bps): < 1 minute

NOTE:  it appears as a Reply to my earlier WARNING email to the lists.
Well, this email was another attack.  There was a download attached.
Also note the "From:" address (email again starting out with an underscore)
and the rest of the email address was different from the first one.

This would lead me (and others I have talk to) that who ever is attempting
these virus attacks is on one of the 4 lists that I sent the original warning 
email to.
Someone emailed (without knowing that I got the 2nd attack with the
RE: Warning in the subject line) stating that he did not think it was an 
attack
on specific person/s.  You be the judge.

I am aware as other are about deleting suspect mail.  I am sending this 
"Final"
email on this subject just to make the memberships of these lists aware of 
what
can happen to you also.  I know about suspect mail and I have Virus 
protectors.
The Virus was caught by the Virus protector before download.  This is not
the Big issue with me.  It is that these attacks are being targeted and the 
Subject line was well written to get specific people to open the mail.  Even
caught me off guard when I say the REPLY email coming in on the subject
I just posted.  Again ... this REPLY was another Virus attack.

In summary:  There are those individuals out there who are on the bottom of
the food chain, who have nothing better to do than to send a virus.  Their
reasons are of no concern to me.  I will not be devoting time to this subject
other than being more aware daily of what is going on around me.  Sound 
familiar?  On a much smaller scale ... 911
