Dear Peter The following selection of references on molluscan lineages, shell shape and micro/ultrastructure might help ('scuse absence of titles): DZIK, J, 1981- Norsk Geologisk Tidsskrift 61, 111-121. GUBANOV, AP, KOUCHINSKY, AV & PEEL, JS, 1999- Lethaia 32, 155-157. LINSLEY, RM, 1977- Paleobiology 3, 196-206. LINSLEY, RM, 1978- American Scientist 66, 432-441. PEEL, J.S., 1991- 157-177 in SIMONETTA, A. & CONWAY MORRIS, S (eds), The early evolution of Metazoa and the significance of problematic taxa. Cambridge Univ Press. POJETA, J Jr, 1980- Tulane Studies in Geology and Paleontology 16, 55-80. RASETTI, F, 1954- J Paleont 28, 59-66. RUNNEGAR, B, 1981- Lethaia 14, 311-322. RUNNEGAR, B, 1996- 77-87 in TAYLOR, T (ed), Origin and early evolution of the Mollusca. Oxford Univ Press. RUNNEGAR, B, 1985- Alcheringa 9, 245-257. And comments by my colleague Andrey Zhuravlev on application of Linsley's 'laws' (references above) to Early Cambrian molluscs under heading Trophic analysis in KRUSE, PD, ZHURAVLEV, A.Yu. & JAMES, NP, 1995- Palaios 10, 291-321 (I have reprints). If you need more info on any of these, let me know. Hope this is useful Pierre Kruse _______________________________ Dr PD Kruse Northern Territory Geological Survey PO Box 2901 Darwin NT 0801 Australia Tel: (8) 8999 5451 Fax: (8) 8999 6824 Web: http://www.dme.nt.gov.au/ntgs Peter Ward <argo@u.washin To: <paleonet@nhm.ac.uk> gton.edu> cc: Sent by: Subject: paleonet Re: seeking information about early Cambrian paleonet-owner mollusk shells @nhm.ac.uk 14/07/2001 02:58 Please respond to paleonet Hello Paleonetters Tom Daniel and I want to take another stab at finite element analysis on mollusk shells, and want to explore the advantages (and disadvantages) of shell coiling from a purely structural/mechanical viewpoint. Our question to the community is: where can we find literature on the shell shapes (and especially shell ultrastructure and shell wall thicknesses) of early monoplacophorans? Do such data exist? We need these parameters to reconstruct our virtual shells. We also want to look at lineages that go from straight to coiled shells in the early Cambrian. Any thoughts? Thanks, and pardon our ignorance. Professor Peter D Ward Dept of Geological Sciences 206-543-2962 ( Office ) 206-543-1190 ( Dept Office ) 206-543-3836 ( Shared Fax )
