Dear Alexander, I have no specific knowledge on drifting bottles, but a group of amateurs and scientists exists to study items that drift on oceanic currents, particularly floating seeds. Cathie Katz publishes their newsletter, The Drifting Seed; she can be reached at Atlantic Press, P.O. Box 510366, Melbourne Beach, FL 32951, USA, email <seabean@castlegate.net>. The Second Annual Sea-Bean Symposium will convene in Melbourne Beach, Florida, from Ocetober 16 to 19, 1997. CAthie Katz is one of the conveners; the other is Dr. Charles R. Gunn, 120 White Squirrel Lane, Brevard, NC 28712, USA, email <Mucuna@juno.com>. Andrew K. Rindsberg Geological Survey of Alabama P.O. Box O Tuscaloosa, AL 35486, USA Alexander Mudroch wrote: today one of our senior paleontologists came to me with a question. He asked me if I know any collections of bottles that were thrown into the sea and found thereafter preferably with their messages still attached. I could only remark that for my belief most of those message- in-the-bottles should be in private hands, but I am not sure. So, I pose this question to the PaleoNet community. By the way this is not meant to be a joke. This collegue is actually working on biogenic abrasion of siliceous substrates. Any hint where those bottles could be found would be very much appreciated.
