HOUSTON PALEO LUNCH BUNCH MEETING, NOVEMBER 11, 1997 Are there fossils in Martian Meteorites? Next meeting of the Houston Paleo Lunch Bunch will be on Tuesday, November 11, 1997, at 11:30 AM, at the Spaghetti Warehouse- 901 Commerce at Travis, in Houston downtown. Lunch will be served around 12:00. Lunch will be a choice of Spaghetti with meat sauce or Lasagna. Payment for lunch must be made upon arrival at the Spaghetti Warehouse (at the front entrance counter). You will receive a blue (Lasagna) or red (spaghetti) token for your meal. Please do not send check. Other meals are also available. Please call Rashel N. Rosen (713-754-6789) to make reservation ASAP. If you must cancel, please call not later than Friday before the meeting. Two speakers will talk about the Martian meteorites' fossil findings. Both speakers are associated with the Johnson Space Center, NASA, under the direction of Mr. David McKay. The speakers, their topics and background are as follows: Dr. Carlton C. Allen, Principal Scientist with Lockheed Martin Engineering & Sciences Co. Received his Ph.D. in Planetary Sciences from the University of Arizona. He will be speaking on bacteria in carbonates both from Italian and Yellowstone Hot Springs. In particular he will be addressing the issue of whether bacteria initiate carbonate precipitation and how long "recognizable bacteria" last in a carbonate matrix. Dr. Penny A. Morris Smith, Lecturer, University of Houston Downtown, NASA Summer Faculty Fellow, and recent recipient of a Johnson Space Center Director's Grant, received her Ph.D. in Paleontology from the University of California, Berkeley. She will be addressing the issues of prokaryote microenvironments as well as differentiating between in situ prokaryote and those that have been introduced after initial sedimentary deposition and lithification. Plan to be there. But make sure to make a reservation ahead of time.
