Dear Colleagues, The following annuncement is the second circular of the Strzelecki International Symposium on the Permian of Eastern Tethys: Biostratigraphy, Palaeogeography and Resources. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++ Strzelecki International Symposium on: THE PERMIAN OF EASTERN TETHYS: BIOSTRATIGRAPHY,PALAEOGEOGRAPHY AND RESOURCES (Incorporating business meetings of IGCP Project 359 and the InternationalSubcommissionon Permian Stratigraphy) to be held at Deakin University, Rusden Campus, Melbourne, Australia. 30 November - 3 December 1997 Second Circular and Registration INTRODUCTION AND AN UPDATE: The Organising Committee cordially invites you to join your colleagues at the Strzelecki internationalsymposium on The Permian of Eastern Tethys: Biostratigraphy, Palaeogeography and Resources, to be held at Deakin University, Melbourne, between 30 November-3 December 1997. Since the release of the first circular, the Organising Committee has received some 80 pre-registrations for the conference, with papers covering a wide range of topics concerning the Permian System.Six keynote papers have also been invited and now confirmed. An additional feature has also been added to the international conference, that is, to dedicate this conference to the 200th Anniversary of the birth of Sir Paul Edmund Strzelecki. Sir Paul Strzelecki,1797-1873, was born on 20 July 1797 at Gluszyna near Pozan of the old Polish Nobility. Strzeleckiwas an explorer of the Americas, Hawaii and the British Colonies of New South Wales and Van Diemen’s Land (now New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania of Australia). During the course of his extensive southeastern Australian explorations, Strzelecki studied the Permian sequences of the Sydney and Tasmanian Basins and collected the first comprehensive suites of fossils from these basins. Strzelecki explored in Australia from 1839 until 1843 inclusive. SYMPOSIUM OBJECTIVES: In many respects, the Permian Period has been regarded as a critical turning point in geological history. Economically, the Permian System is also extremely important as it contains extensive black coals, metalliferous deposits and significant quantities of oil and gas. This conference is designed to improve our current understanding of the System, with particular emphasis on the Eastern Tethys region. THEMES: The conference will be structured into seven main themes: · Permian stratigraphy, sedimentology and palaeontology of peri-Gondwanan and eastern Asian terranes; · Antitropical (bipolar) distribution of Permian biota and biostratigraphical/palaeoclimatic implications; · Permian palaeogeography and climate of Eastern Tethys; · Permian migration pathways of biotas in Eastern Tethys; · Correlation of Permian sequences between Gondwanan, Tethyan and Boreal Realms; · Distribution of Permian coal deposits in relation to climate and palaeogeography; · Geochronology and boundaries of the Permian Period (including contributions to IGCP Project 359). PAPERS AND POSTERS: The Organising Committee now calls for titles, abstracts and papers from intending participants. The abstract volume will be published as a special issue of the Deakin University, School of Aquatic Science and Natural Resources Management Technical Paper Series (with ISBN number). Abstracts to be included in the abstracts volume will be required as photo-ready copy, disc or email by 1st July 1997. Abstracts may be up to three A4 pages in length (both illustrations and references inclusive). Posters are also welcomed. SYMPOSIUM PUBLICATIONS: The Royal Society of Victoria has agreed to publish the proceedings of the Symposium as issues of the internationally-referred Proceedings of the Royal Society of Victoria, an old and prestigious Australian journal A paper must be presented (either orally or in poster) before being considered for publication. All manuscripts will be subjected to the normal peer-review procedures. The Organising Committee requires all manuscripts to be submitted by or before the beginning of the Conference. VENUE AND WEATHER Melbourne (and SE Australia) in December has a warm summer coastal climate. It is usually a warm, sunny month with temperature ranging between 18°C and 30°C. However, rain and cool conditions can also occur at this time of the year. PRE-CONFERENCE RECEPTION (‘ICE-BREAKER’): A Pre-Conference reception will take place in the Staff Room of the Rusden Campus, between 7-9pm on Saturday, 29th November 1997. Beer, wine, soft drinks, and finger food will be provided. Conference registration will also be arranged at the same time. FIELD EXCURSIONS: Two excursions have been planned: 1. Mid-conference excursion: A full-day mid-conference excursion is planned to examine the classic Permian Gondwanan glacialsequences in the Bacchus Marsh area, about 60 kilometres from Melbourne (Non-marine Triassic and Tertiary outcrops can also be examined on the same excursion). Cost: Cost for this excursion is estimated to be $30, which includes lunch and an afternoon tea/wine tasting at a typical Australian winery. 2. Post-Conference excursion ( southern Sydney Basin, New South Wales): This post-conference excursion will take place between 4-7 December 1997, to examine the Permian sedimentary sequences (both marine and non-marine) of the southern Sydney Basin along the southeastern coast of New South Wales. Participants will have the opportunity to collect abundant Permian fossils: brachiopods, bivalves, gastropods, bryozoans, trace and plant fossils. The excursion will depart Melbourne at about 8.00 am on Thursday 4th December and finishes in Sydney on Sunday 7th December (late afternoon). It will take one full day’s drive on the first day from Melbourne to Batemans Bay in southern New South Wales where the excursion party will stay on the nights of 4th to 6th of December. On Sunday 7th December, the excursion party will stop at Kiama and Wollongong on the way to Sydney. The Kiama stop is included as a bonus for participants to inspect the Gerringong Volcanics, part of the Permo-Carboniferous Kiaman Magnetozone. Participants who are to attend the Palaeobiogeography of Australasian Faunas and Flora (PAFF) conference will be dropped off at Wollongong. For more details of PAFF conference, see the “OTHER ACTIVITIES” below. International participants who wish to depart from Sydney will need to take into account the excursion time schedule when booking flights. For those who wish to return to Melbourne from Sydney, they will have to leave Sydney with the excursion bus on Monday 8th December. Cost: The total cost of this post-conference excursion is set at $250, which includes an excursion guide, return transport (Melbourne-Batemans Bay-Wollongong-Sydney-Melbourne), twin-share motel accommodation for 3 nights at Batemans Bay (4th-6th December), an excursion dinner (Australian style BBQ), lunches for 5th to 7th December, but EXCLUDES cost of other evening meals and the accommodation for the night of 7th December. A Deposit of $100 is required for this post-conference excursion. TRAVEL TO AND WITHIN MELBOURNE: Within Australia: Qantas is the official conference airline. A discount of 45% off the full economy domestic (within Australia) airfare at the time booking is available for this conference subject to seat availability. Please quote “AUVIC...” or the name, date and destination of the conference when booking. Contact Qantas Groups and Conventions Reservations to arrange your discounted airfares. The Qantas Groups and Conventions Reservations telephone number is : Toll Free : 1 800 650 200 Within Melbourne: Transport will be arranged to pick up delegates from the Melbourne Airport to their booked motels or residential colleges. Transport may be also arranged gratis on request for delegates departing Melbourne after the conference. A shuttle bus service will also be available for transporting delegates between Conference venues and respective accommodation sites. International: For international delegates wishing to fly Qantas to Australia, group discount airfares are available if there are ten (10) or more delegates originating from the same international airport.
