More TV science--ugh!

UPDATE ON TV SCIENCE FOR THE NEW SEASON IN AMERICA

The TV networks this season are expanding their fare of pseudoscience and
antiscience. Get ready for lots of questions from your students and
nonscientific friends.

1. NBC ran "Dark Skies" last Saturday night--a story about UFOs, alien
invasions, alien abductions, aliens interfering with and causing major
political events of the past (Gary Powers Soviet overflight, the
assassination of the Kennedys, US government conspiracy and coverup, and so
much more would take the "Encyclopedia of the Paranormal" to classify all
of it). The program starts with the disclaimer "The following story
fiction". Hooray, I thought, NBC is at least being honest. Whoa!
Premature celebration, for the next words were (paraphrased): "or so we
would like you to believe". Yep, a double disclaimer. One good thing
about this program: Its was rated lower than number 50, so I suppose we
won't have "Dark Skies" to kick around much longer this season.

2. Tonight on ABC at 9pm (Pac. Time) you can see the update "Chariots of
the Gods? The Mysteries Continue". Remember this one? Ancient aliens
drawing in the sands of Peruvian deserts and lots of other neat stuff. Bet
there's not even a double disclaimer on this one!

3. Tomorrow night, at least in Denver, on PBS you can see "With God on our
Side: An incisive look at the religious right". It's several hours
worth, but should be interesting to get a look at them.

DON'T FORGET THE ECLIPSE OF THE MOON TONIGHT (about 7:19 pm in the Bay Area).

I would love to get your impressions of any of this.
