What a can of worms we seem to be stirring up. I am sure I had not meant to be insulting to users of usenet groups (which I use and enjoy) and I admit that I was hasty in equating 'usenet' with 'unmoderated'. My comments about the 'dinosaur' came from a colleague (who I shall not name) who advised me against subscribing for the reasons I have stated. Let me state it clearly -- I am all for popularizing science. That's what I get paid to do at Nature, through our syndication service and by writing our weekly press release. So it's my job. But as part of that job I recognize that there are many different kinds of target audience, and that trying to be accessible to everybody usually ends up pleasing nobody. So yes, let us welcome the paleo usenet to the fold, but keep it separate from paleonet. Those who want both can then have both, and those who want just one or the other need not be disturbed. -- Henry Gee ------------------------------------------------------------ Nature, henry@chiswick.demon.co.uk 4 Little Essex Street, naturelondon@mcimail.com London WC2R 3LF nature@naturedc.com tel +44 171 836 6633 x 2473 fax +44 171 836 9934 ------------------------------------------------------------
