True enough--specialization within biology or geology would be more likely, if he tried it academically. Berkeley, I think, was the only place with a paleo department and major, and we got subsumed into Integrative Biology in 1989 to save bucks (you can specialize in paleo still). I judge from his retoric that Newt was never a Berkeley student!!! Jere H.
