paleonet Bone taphonomy/diagenesis

For any interested in aspects of bone preservation/diagenesis and retrieval of biochemical chemical or isotopic data from ancient bone.....

Two publications that might not be in the normal reading of palaeontologists.

The current issue of Archaeometry (Vol 44. part 3 Aug 2002) is devoted to papers from the Fourth International Meeting on Bone Diagenesis.

Papers include (but are not limited to) reviews on state of understanding of bone diagenetic processes; reviews of mechanisms and rates of organic survival in bone (including DNA); the role of microbial decompsoition in bone degradation and fossilisation, survival of the mineral component of bone, and preservation of stable isotope signals; and taphonomic investigations in to bone survival.

Additionally, the Mineralogical Society of America Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry series has just published a new volume (Volume 48) devoted to phosphate minerals.

Phosphates, Geochemical, Geobiological and Materials Importance. MJ Kohn, J Rakovan and JM Hughes eds, Min Soc Am Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry series V. 48, 2002

This includes chepters on calcium phosphate biominerals, stable isotope compositions in bone mineral, and trace elements in modern and ancient bone mineral.

Apologies to anyone not interested.
