Academic Position in Paleontology and Stratigraphy

At the geology department of the Catholic University Leuven , Belgium a position will be opened for a full time professor in paleontology and stratigraphy , starting 1 st October 2003 .

The position will be formally opened later this year .The dean of the Faculty of Sciences has permitted this preannouncement.

The geology department is looking for a young researcher who is prepared to teach paleontology and stratigraphy and to do and organise research at an international level. The candidate has to have a doctorate degree and already some years of postdoc experience. Her/his publications should be in internationally ranked journals.

If the candidate is not speaking Dutch, it is expected that she/he can teach in english and is prepared to learn the Dutch language in a reasonable time.

The research will concentrate on the Cenozoic biostratigraphy and paleoecology. An essential element is the capacity of the new professor to interprete fossils in terms of environment, ecology, paleoclimate and some experience with isotopic research , evolutionary biology and sedimentary analyses related to stratigraphy is desirable.

No preference for particular fossil groups exists but the research needs to be complementary with the present stratigraphic research carried out in Leuven. Information can be found on the website of the laboratory for stratigraphy http://kuleuven.ac.be/geology/hsg/Strat/ .
