HOLOCENE SEA-LEVEL CHANGES IN SOUTHWEST BRITAIN

Director of Study: Dr Roland Gehrels
Second supervisor: Dr Dan Charman
Other Participant: Dr Helen Roe, PDRA

The aim of this project is to establish a continuous record of
Holocene sea-level change for the south Devon coast. Methods include
the micropalaeontological analyses of peats, applying the integrated
use of foraminifera, testate amoebae and diatoms as a tool for
reconstructing sea-level changes. The student will collect modern
samples from a range of saltmarsh and coastal freshwater habitats to
establish the factors that determine distributions of the three types
of micro-organisms. The methodology will then be applied to cores to
produce sea-level records that span the Holocene.

The salary is stlg5,510 p.a. with an additional allowance for research
expenses.

Applications are invited from candidates holding first class or good
upper second class honours degrees in Geography/Ecology/Geology or
allied disciplines. You must have experience in Quaternary
micropalaeontology with expertise in one of the following microfossil
groups: foraminifera, diatoms, testate amoebae. Knowledge of Holocene
sea-level change, field sampling and survey techniques is preferred.
