Re: GSA Vanity Press for Paleontologists

Dear All:

This may or may not be news to everyone on the list but the
Society of Vertebrate Paleontology has been charging a $15 abstracts
fee for as long as I've been attending meetings, and the number of
papers has been increasing roughly threefold/decade. The fee
apparently neither limits submissions nor affronts anyone. SVP seems
to have the same problems with burgeoning sessions and oversized
meetings as GSA.
The rejection rates of papers are about the same
too, that is low, except that there is a movement toward using
poster sessions effectively and non-pejoratively by having posters up
for two days and scheduling only posters for a half-day. It works
well and most of us are pleased to present posters in lieu of talks.
