Thanks to everyone who responded to my query regarding the biological mechanisms which govern if an organism produces an aragonite or calcite test/shell. (The question arises since its been noted that the earliest planktonic foraminifera were aragonitic). I received several helpful pointers in the right direction. I think my question is on quite a few peoples minds, but there are still no definitive answers. I'll let PalaeoNet and Micropal subscribers know if any revelations come to light. In the meantime if anyone has any further thoughts please let me know.
