As most of you already know, the SVP meeting will be held in New
York this year at the American Museum of Natural History. The dates are
October 17-19. The big news is that among the symposia on October 16 will
be a preparator's symposium.
We welcome all preparators and those interested in preparation
techniques to attend. Our goal during this symposium is to facilitate the
free exchange of information, not just to present information about the
techniques that we use, but also to learn from others new viewpoints and
ideas that we might use to improve our work.
The morning session will be devoted to oral presentations. We
already have a partial line up of very interesting talks - including a talk
on micropreparation by Bill Amaral and a discussion of the history of
preparation technique by Don Baird. Among others, we will also hear from
Pete Kroehler about the degadation of silicone molds, Carrie Herbel on the
solubility of various resins, Bob Evander on acid preparation, and Steve
Jabo on padded conservation jackets.
We want to encourage all other speakers and posters. Please submit
your abstacts to the SVP Organizing Committee by May 1, noting that you are
interested in paricipating in the symposium. The first circular for the
meeting should be available soon. We will have regular 15 minute talks,
and posters will be available for viewing.
The afternoon session of the preparator's symposium will be devoted
to an open house in the preparation labs of the American Museum of Natural
History. The open house will include a number of hands-on demonstrations
of preparation and mounting techniques, focusing on techniques used during
the recently completed fossil halls renovations here at the museum.
We are very excited about hosting this symposium and hope that you
will share in this exchange of information. We would really appreciate it
if you would pass this announcement on. (We will be sending this
announcement by regular mail). We will also be updating the preparator's
directory, to make sure we have current addresses, etc. and we would like
to include e-mail addresses and FAX numbers.
We're looking forward to seeing you here in New York. We would
like to have an idea of how many of you plan on attending and/or
presenting.
Please feel free to respond.
