From: "Steve Carey" <CAREYS@fs3.ballarat.edu.au> To: paleonet-owner@nhm.ac.uk Date: Mon, 13 Nov 1995 11:03:59 GMT+1000 Subject: Re: Evolution Controversy in the Deep South (USA) Priority: normal Status: O I had a first small success with biblical literalists recently when an elderly couple - Jehovah's Witnesses and lovely people - came to the door. We got on to evolution and Jim made the comment that it was "only a theory". I took great delight in distinguishing "theory" and "hypothesis" essentially as Prof Gastaldo does - and even greater delight in seeing a ray of light shine in Jim's mind (his wife was more opaque). The good Governor of Alabama is unlikely to be interested in such niceties, but at least some literalists are willing to be enlightened on at least some aspects of the evolution controversy. With kind regards, Stephen Carey University of Ballarat Ballarat, Vic Australia
