To quote from an article by Prof Bernard Leake and Graham Durant, 
Lord Kelvin's estimates ranged from 20 to 500 million years based on 
the cooling Earth model.  He later, presumably under a lot of 
pressure from various quarters, reduced the value to 20-40 million.
