In response to Norm's query about what's happening science-funding wise in
the U.S.:

Generally speaking, the Republican majority in the US Congress has taken
upon itself to be the moral and scientific majority of the nation. In
their infinite wisdom, they are threatening to do away with the National
Biological Service, Endangered Species Act, USGS and the like; certain
"special interest groups" (usually = religious right [as opposed to
"correct"]) are pressuring schools to adopt creation science in their
curricula in place of or in addition to the study of evolution; freedom of
speech on the Internet is threatened by overzealous American politicians
who would like to restrict it "to save our children" from having to see
things THEY deem are rather 'unsavory'; and certain groups are taking hard
close looks at the esoteric things NSF fund and would rather that $$ go to
better things that make more sense in the short run (as oppose to solving
larger problems in the long run).

Otherwise, things are lovely here. How's the weather in London these days?
