We have been using the Adobe Collector's Edition Patterns & Textures. These
include official U.S.G.S. patterns for tiling. These are also contained in
the new version of Illustrator 5.5

The easist way to import them into freehand is have access to version 5.0
which reads and writes Illustrator files. Other than that you will need
access to Illustrator and export the patterns as Illustrator 1.1 files
w/Mac B&W Preview. These files are importable into Freehand 3.0 and require
only moderate "cleaning".

If this is impossible, try to find someone to convert these files to pict2
format. This will require some extensive "cleaning" but not as intensive as
drawing your own from scratch.

Which DOS or Windows application(s)?

Illustrator for Windows is probably your best bet, if you have access to a copy.
