>Hi Paleonetters -- Would anyone know where one could purchase >a box corer off the shelf or, alternatively, get plans to >build one? Intended use is in the Caspian Sea. --Woody Wise Hi Woody, here's my list of marine hardware suppliers. It is definitely incomplete. If some of you know more addresses please send them. I will assemble the information and distribute it again over Paleonet. My own exploration of gravity corers and box corers revealed great differences between suppliers in price and design of the equipment. I would ask for information by as many suppliers as possible because their various hardware is designed for specific scientific and sampling requirements, and compatibility with the ship needs to be considered including the winch. Building a box corer requires a good workshop with people experienced in marine conditions. The costs for personnell and the risk (the product needs to be tested and modified, long-term performance and stability will be experienced only in the field when the tool is needed) may not justify to build one. In any case, be prepared to pay a lot of money. Costs for transport add to the box corer. Depending on your plans you may consider to borrow a box corer and to negotiate a reasonable price with the people. In case of loss, however, an insurance might be a good idea. The area you want to sample falls in a part of the world where you get a lot for a dollar and the colleagues need the money desperately. As an alternative source in western European and the U.S. I know at least GEOMAR at Kiel and Brown university who have box corers to borrow. There are certainly more sources. Good luck!
