I am going offline from paleonet since I am about ready to travel overseas for ODP LEG 161. I will maintain my personal id - so please respond to either address below. Effective the end of July I am commencing a job at a field station operated by the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI). I will be resident paleontologist there and an instructor with multiple possibilities, depending on funding, in the future. I am officially writing, with permission, on behalf of OMSI, seeking possible equipment surplus support for a couple of the field stations operated by OMSI. OMSI has a large museum, IMAX, planetarium, etc. (e.g. submarine) in Portland and is a non-profit organization that operates some year-round science camps across the state for youth, and in summers - for all ages. The Hancock facility is located within the John Day National preserve in Fossil Oregon - I know --- to the envy of many of you - appropriate for a paleontologist to live in no? The John Day formation is rich in Eocene/Oligocene fauna and flora that document the climatic shift seen during this time period in the Pacific Northwest. Preservation is between lahars and apparently pretty good. Well, anyway - Fossil is a county seat for the least populated county in the state -- so it goes: "It's dead in Fossil". Bear with me: We need microscopes (the few there are in terrible shape) that some of you may have surplused - both dissecting and petrographic. Old video cameras and computer equipment would also be useful. Lapadaries and other rock saws and equipment exist - but could be supplemented. Please contact me at pebelanger@aol.com or 713-666-2618 - or between May 8th and July 4th: Belanger@drake.tamu.edu effective 7/24/95 Paul E.
