Departmental Required Skills: Most of the work performed by this position is vertebrate fossil preparation. This work requires the preparator to spend many hours each day sitting on a chair and leaning over a specimen, often working through a microscope, removing the matrix around the bone. The specimens can be in very large blocks. Candidate must be able to lift 30-60 pounds and also be able to shift larger blocks on the prep table. The frequency of lifting heavy blocks is occasional; shifting of large blocks on the work table is slightly more frequent. This is indoor work with significant dust in the work environment. High attention to detail and high accuracy are required. A substantial amount of fossil preparation requires extreme accuracy so that minute structures on the fossil are not lost. Applicants must demonstrate familiarity with the tools and techniques used to prepare fossil specimens, including air scribes, manual preparation, microscopic preparation, molding and casting, and acid preparation methodology. Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education The successful candidate will have a degree in a paleontology-related field or a minimum of three years of experience in fossil preparation. Preference will be given to applicants with some experience in histological preparation, however, if the degree and/or experience requirement is met, training in histological preparation will be provided. Experience in preparing specimens from extremely hard matrices Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including a willingness to interact with the public Ability to oversee and teach others Ability to work both independently and in a busy team environment Experience with varied conservation methods, museum collections, and project management - Knowledge of taxonomy and experience with collection databases Accurate record keeping, cataloguing, and documentation skills Essential Job Duties: The Fossil Preparator will provide timely preparation of micro- and macro-vertebrate remains, invertebrate, and paleobotanical specimens for research, exhibit, and exchange. Other Work/Responsibilities: Other duties include supervising and teaching students and volunteers who are involved in preparation of fossil materials, including workshops for the public in fossil preparation; assisting the current technician in maintaining a documentation system for prepared fossil specimens and digital images for use in an on-line data base; and assisting in preparation of histological specimens without compromising the integrity of the specimen.
