Dear Colleagues,
Many paleontologists may qualify for a new (open rank) faculty position
in the Department of Geosciences, Virginia Tech (see below). Although the
official job title ("Computational Earth Systems Scientist") is
somewhat perplexing, the search will target paleoceanography,
paleobiology, and paleoclimatology (see below). Anyone who uses
computer-intensive techniques (e.g., forward models, bootstrap modules,
freeware/software development, etc.) to study or model the fossil record
should consider applying for this new position. If you have any questions
about the position, our department, or the university, please email me
directly. Also please note that the application review will start around
February 15th.
Sincerely,
Michal

Tenure-Track, Computational Earth
Systems Scientist, Virginia Tech
The Department of Geosciences at Virginia Tech anticipates filling an
open-rank tenure-track position to start in the Fall of 2006 in the focus
area of Earth Systems, with emphasis on computational approaches.
Preference will be given to scientists with demonstrated expertise in
computational modeling of Earth Systems history and Earth Systems
processes based upon data from (and models of) the
geological/stratigraphic record. Areas of special interest include
quantitative research in paleoceanography, paleobiology,
paleoclimatology, and global climate change.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in Geosciences or a related field and
have a demonstrated record of application of high level computational
techniques to Earth Systems. The successful candidate will be expected to
develop a vigorous, externally funded research program to complement
existing programs in the department. The applicant should have a strong
commitment to undergraduate and graduate education. A Ph.D. is required
at the time of appointment. Questions regarding the application process
should be directed to Carolyn Williams (wilcar@vt.edu or 540-231-6894).
For detailed information about the Department, applicants are encouraged
to visit the Department's Home Page at
http://www.geos.vt.edu/.
Applications must be submitted online at
https://jobs.vt.edu/
and reference posting no. 043380. The application package should include a cover letter, resume, a statement of research interests, and the names and contact information (email, phone, and fax) of three referees that can provide recommendation letters upon request. Review of applications will begin on February 15, 2006, and continue until the position is filled. Virginia Tech is an EO/AA university. Virginia Tech is the recipient of the National Science Foundation ADVANCE Institutional Transformation Award to increase the participation of women in academic science and engineering careers. Individuals with disabilities desiring accommodations in the application process should notify Ms. Melissa Simpkins (msimpkin@vt.edu), (540) 231-4033, or call TTY 1-800-828-1120.
