Geology, at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign invites
applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of

experience, may be considered at the Associate Professor level. The
anticipated starting date is August 16, 2006, but the date is negotiable.
We seek a broadly trained biologist (or biologist-geologist) who uses
innovative, interdisciplinary approaches to understand issues such as
paleoecology, biogeochemistry, ecophysiology and evolutionary biology,
and/or global change from the paleorecord. A Ph.D. in a relevant field is

successful candidate must demonstrate an ability: 1) to establish a
creative, externally funded research program; 2) to teach at the
undergraduate and graduate levels in subject areas such as paleobotany,
introductory organismal biology or ecology, plant structure and geobiology,
and to develop new courses of their own choosing. The University of
Illinois provides a highly collaborative and supportive academic environment
, with opportunities for interactions with the Program in Ecology and
Evolutionary Biology (www.life.uiuc.edu/peeb/

By way of background, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign,
although a State University of some 40000 students, is in fact the largest
single recipient of National Science Foundation competitive funds in the
country, and has been for the past 6 years. It has also been very
successful in obtaining foundation, state and international support. It also
houses the 3 rd largest academic library in N. America. Current faculty won
two Nobel prizes and the Crafoord Prize in Biosciences last year, each for
research conducted at UIUC. The University is also home to the Morrow
Plots, the longest running agricultural field experiment in N. America, and
only 30 years younger than the Broadbalk at Rothamsted. The SoyFACE
facility on the South Farms and immediately adjacent to campus is the first
fully replicated facility for investigation of the direct impacts of both
elevated carbon dioxide and ozone on crop ecosystems under fully open air
conditions. Across six departments there are over 100 faculty involved in
different areas of plant biological research, supported by national
facilities on campus including the Beckman Institute, the Institute for
Genomic Biology, and the National Center for Supercomputer Applications. The
Illinois Natural History, Geology and Water Surveys, each comprising several
scientists (most with adjunct professor affiliations) also share the campus;
the first two would be particularly valuable resource for the appointee.
Large well archived fossil collections in Geology, Plant Biology and the
Museum may be a further resource, along with mass isotope and a range of
testing and analysis facilities.
