paleonet RE: Smithsonian to Screen a Movie That Makes a Case Against Evolution

All,
All,
In looking at the calendar of events for the Baird Theater, there
doesn't seem to be anything listed for June 23, as claimed.
http://www.mnh.si.edu/cal_events.html

If they just haven't gotten around to updating the events on their
website, it's really sad that the USNM would agree to such a farce. I
saw and heard from enough of the 'so-called' experts representing the
Discovery Institute at the so-called "evolution" hearings in Topeka
earlier this month to know just how twisted and deceitful these people
really are.

If this story is true, however, then I think we need to voice our
opinion of this event as loudly and to as many people at the Smithsonian
as possible. I know there is a membership renewal form sitting on my
desk that may sit there for a long time....

The special events policy of the Smithsonian (USNM) is shown here:
http://www.nmnh.si.edu/specialevents/policy.html

It will be interesting to hear how the NSF, AAAS and other organizations
weigh in on this.

Subject: Smithsonian to Screen a Movie That Makes a Case Against
Evolution

 From the NY Times:

The Discovery Institute, a group in Seattle that supports an alternative

theory, "intelligent design," is announcing on its Web site that it and
the Director of the [Smithsonian] Museum "are happy to announce the
national premiere and private evening reception" on June 23 for the
movie, "The Privileged Planet: The Search for Purpose in the Universe."
which the Smithsonian is co-sponsoring. The museum receives a $16,000
donation for the use of the Baird Auditorium for the event.
Interestingly enough, the staff members viewed the film before
approving the event to make sure that it complied with the museum's
policy, which states that /*"events of a religious or partisan political

nature" are not permitte**d,*/ along with personal events such as
weddings, or fund-raisers, raffles and cash bars. It also states that/*
"all events at the National Museum of Natural History are co-sponsored
by the museum."*

/Denyse O'Leary, a proponent of Intelligent Design, calls this a
"stunning development".* */*
