Departmental Description

School of Earth and Environmental Sciences

The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences is one of six Departments in the Faculty of Science and was formed in April 1998 by combining the well-established Departments of Geology and Physics and incorporating the provision for Environmental Science teaching in the University. The School currently offers nine undergraduate degree pathways and three taught masters programmes. All pathways have an extensive and vibrant fieldwork programme (both UK and overseas). About 400 students are currently registered on these programmes which are supported by twenty-three full-time academic staff and thirteen support staff.

The School is housed in the relatively modern Burnaby Building on the main Guildhall Campus of the University. The building also houses lecture theatres and teaching laboratories and the School’s research laboratories, including a new ICPMS, Scanning Electron Microscope, XRF, XRD, gamma spectrometry, geochemistry, palaeontology, soil mechanics, rock mechanics and rock preparation laboratories. Comprehensive networked IT facilities are available to all academic staff and undergraduate and postgraduate students in the building.

A wide range of research activities is based in the School. There are active and internationally recognised research groups in:
Palaeobiology, Sedimentology and Biogeochemistry;
Intraplate and Plate Boundary processes;
Geological Hazard assessment;
Environmental modeling;
Environmental radiation;
Environmental mobility of stable isotopes and trace elements.
26 students are currently registered for higher degrees within the School.
