Background The area known as "Mistaken Point Extension" is hereby proposed for ecological reserve designation to protect newly discovered fossils directly adjacent to the existing Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve. The new site contains complex animal fossils that are even older than those previously identified in the area. A Public Hearing was held on April 27th, 2005 in the community of Portugal Cove South, to discuss, (1) the implications of establishing an extension for Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve, (2) the preliminary management plan, and (3) the proposed regulations to govern the reserve. To accomplish this WERAC is suggesting the following: that hunting and fishing continue, removal of fossils be prohibited, that the use of the site for educational and scientific purposes be encouraged, that private land be excluded from the reserve, that use of motorized vehicles be prohibited, and that new development activities such as forestry, mining and cabin construction be prohibited. _______________________________ Public submissions will be accepted until WERAC has drafted its report to government, however a May 27th, 2005 deadline has been instituted to give WERAC sufficient time to review all written submissions before drafting their report. Written submission can be forwarded to: Mr. Paul Taylor, Executive Secretary, WERAC 33 Reid's Lane Deer Lake NL A8A 2A3 (709) 635-3854 paul.a.taylor@gov.nl.ca On behalf of WERAC, thank-you for your time.
