In response to Gilles' comment below: Many society journals (e.g., Paleobiology and Palaeontologia Electronica) have _no_ manuscript backlog, and can publish as many accepted manuscripts as come their way. To use PE as an example, we are currently working on the next three issues of the journal concurrently, and our only delay in publication results from the time it takes reviewers to return manuscripts, and the time it takes authors to revise and vet their online manuscript "proofs". This lack of a backlog is size-independent - we can handle large volumes which include many papers (such as our next issue, which will have ~25 papers in it), or those that have only a few very large papers (such as those that have 100+ figures, myriad animations, etc.). So I say to you and to the paleontological community: Bring it on. I think our society journals will rise to the challenge, by publishing more pages, more quickly, more efficiently than commercial journals. It's all very well for us to say "yeah it's a good idea = to publish in society journals only". Individually it will make very = little difference. I think we need to be organised to do that properly. = If even half the people on paleonet sign a statement refusing to publish = in commercial journals, and going for society and online journals = instead, it might just make a difference. You're probably right, but if all of a sudden we all submit all our = manuscript to society journals, will they be able to take it? How long = will we have to wait before the publication of our work?
