paleonet Re: it just keeps coming etc.

The fact that religious fundamentalists seem to be in the ascendancy in the US, coupled with the fact that one has to be fingerprinted and photographed upon entry and that nationals of assorted countries have been imprisoned for years in Cuba with no recourse to legal representation, certainly has had an effect in many other countries, such that now, students in Australia are looking to broaden their horizons in Europe rather than the US. If the fundamentalists ascend any further in the US and somehow impose their peculiar obsession further, you will see a continued decline in all fields of science, while other ‘countries’ such as China, India, Russia and the European Union will take the running and the US will become a relative backwater.

In reply to Dr Lechterbeck: It is difficult for many Europeans as well as Australians to understand the power that Christianity has in the US. Some 15-20 years ago, I was rather taken aback by the results of a survey published which showed that in answer to a question along the lines of ‘Do you believe there is a god’, over 95% of Americans said yes, while only about 67% of Brits and Australians said they did. I suspect this originally stems from the perception over the last few hundred years of the US as a haven for those being persecuted, commonly for religious reasons, and that the persecuted were mainly from Europe. Australia started its road to nationhood as a penal colony. We were very lucky.
